“I believe fitness is the most under-utilized tool to help people recover from addiction. I learned first hand that there is a lot to be said for the connection between physical fitness and mental fitness, emotional fitness, spiritual fitness.” – Doug Bopst

In this episode I’m going to be talking to Doug Bopst, who was arrested when he was 20 years old and faced a felony conviction for possession of a large amount of weed with intention to sell. Since then, he has become a successful personal trainer, author, and podcast host. His mission is to inspire others to overcome their own adversity, whatever it may be. He shares his inspiring life story and reminds us to reflect on how we can take responsibility for our actions and their consequences, even in difficult circumstances.

  • 02:12 Doug shares his story – from felony to fitness to free
  • 13:30 The impact of the kindness and belief of strangers
  • 16:15 Doug’s motivation for helping others change their lives through fitness
  • 18:30 Awareness, acceptance, and action
  • 21:30 How the consequence of time in prison spurred Doug to choose new actions

Connect with Doug Bopst:

Doug is an award-winning personal trainer, author of three books, and host of the Adversity Advantage Podcast on a crusade to inspire others to overcome adversity and become the best version of themselves. He’s a former convicted felon and drug addict who spent time in jail for “possession with intent to sell.” While locked in a cell, he slayed his personal demons, kicked addiction, and reinvented himself. As a matter of fact, he hasn’t touched drugs since the day he was incarcerated in 2008. He has been featured on NBC’s ‘Today Show,’ Men’s Health, Forbes, Rich Roll, The Skinny Confidential, Impact Theory, and many other media outlets/podcasts. “From Felony to Fitness to Free,” a short documentary about his story, has been screened at The Reel Recovery Film Festival in Los Angeles and New York City.
