How do you feel about Valentine’s Day? Love it? Hate it? Take it or leave it?
As a love and relationship expert and psychotherapist, I’ve definitely seen how the hype and expectations around this holiday can set people up for disappointment whether single or partnered.
Whatever the case, and however you feel about Valentine’s Day, I want to offer you an alternative or an addition (depending on how you feel about it).
(And if you’re back this week hoping for Part 2 of “Should You Stay or Go”, I’ll be covering that in next week’s episode on February 18th, so stay tuned! 😉)
This week I’m giving you my 2 cents on Valentine’s Day and a beautiful self-love ritual that’s the perfect way to practice falling wildly in love with yourself!
Here are 6 reasons I’m not a super fan of Valentine’s Day:
1. Romance shouldn’t come in a heart-shaped box once a year.
I am a LOVER and I’m sure you are too. The thing about Valentine’s day is that it’s not really about love…it’s about romance. You don’t need a designated day to be romantic.
2. It’s bad for the environment.
Approximately 9,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide are released into our atmosphere from roses on Valentine’s Day. Chocolate and jewelry also have significant environmental and social costs…from deforestation and destruction of natural habitats from cacao farming to the human rights violations of diamond mining and trade.
3. There’s an upswing in suicide and depression.
According to Diane Brice, director of the Suicide Prevention Service of the Central Coast (SPSCC), Valentine’s Day marks the beginning of increased rates of suicide and depression with a spike in the spring.“[It’s] because there’s so much emphasis put on being partnered [and] being in love, and a lot of people just aren’t.” It’s sad to me that this holiday makes so many people feel like if they aren’t in a relationship or in love that there’s something wrong with them.
4. It’s super non-inclusive.
If you’re in a relationship there’s a ton of pressure to have an amazing, mind-blowing experience which can feel impossible (and be expensive) and if you’re single you’re just left out of the equation completely.
5. It’s super commercialized.
In 2017, American’s spent more than 30 billion dollars on Valentine’s Day. I can think of approximately 30 billion better things to spend 30 billion dollars on…how ‘bout you?
6. This weird-ass holiday has questionable origins at best.
Way back in the day in ancient Rome, Lupercalia was celebrated in mid-February, and it was basically a fertility festival where men would sacrifice a goat and a dog and then whip women with the dead animal hides in hopes of increasing the woman’s fertility. Um. Need I say more??
Ok, so if you kind of secretly hate Valentine’s day too, or hey, even if you’re into it (no judgment), I’ve created a Revolutionary Self-Love Ritual that will support you in having a really good relationship with yourself. Single or partnered….this one’s for everyone!
I firmly believe that self-love is the only path to REAL love.
Holding yourself in high-esteem, consistently practicing self-care and really celebrating YOU impacts the vibe you’re putting out in the world. Our feelings and our thoughts have an energetic vibration and how we treat ourselves matters. If you treat yourself like crap or are always at the bottom of your to-do list…you’re basically broadcasting that that’s how you believe you deserve to be treated.
YOU set the bar for the kind of love, romance and care that you want…so why not try this ritual that I designed to help you throw YOURSELF a total lovefest?!
I can’t wait to hear about what you think and what shifts in your internal and external experience with this so please, comment here or tag me @terricole on Instagram if you’re compelled to share a snap of your very own Revolutionary Self-Love Ritual!
Keep treating yourself with love and consideration, so that your unique love light can SHINE! The world needs it!
