“The more well-versed you become in understanding the most common psychological defense mechanisms you are using in your life, the healthier your relationships will be and the more empowered you become.” – Terri Cole

Intro

The truth is, we all unconsciously employ psychological defense mechanisms in our daily lives.

Projection is a particularly tricky one as it’s primary function is to keep us in the dark about our shadow selves and our true motives. It’s more complicated than straight DENIAL because we don’t just deny our unacceptable feelings or impulses we PROJECT them onto another.

In this episode of the Terri Cole Show, I am opening up a dialogue about projection and helping you get to the root of what it is and how it may be affecting you, your life, and relationships because awareness + new actions = transformation and informed decisions!

Highlights:

  • 02:14 What is projection?
  • 03:12 Examples of projection
  • 05:22 How projection plays on a personal level
  • 06:15 Two forms of projection
  • 08:53 Projecting onto people we don’t know

Yes! Projecting your positive qualities onto another actually is a devaluation of self. If you find yourself unrealistically idolizing the positive attributes in others that could be a sign that you need to more realistically look at yourself.

This explanation is from, The Lost Art of Compassion by Lorna Ladner, ” …. When you have a deep, abiding respect and admiration for someone, relating to that person helps you feel better about yourself. The relationship can inspire and empower.

…. When you unconsciously project your good qualities onto someone else, you lose touch with those qualities. You feel that you’re inherently less valuable than the other person. … [Y]ou stay stuck in a position of insecurity and weakness.

To resolve the problem you need to recognize your projection as a projection, moving from idolizing to respect.”
